Most homes in our Stratford block are little 1950s capes. Do they need a different kind of wash?

Accepted Answer

They do. Those post-war capes usually have aluminum siding or original cedar shake under decades of paint, and both surfaces are softer than what you find on a newer home. A high-pressure rinse will dent the aluminum or push water behind the shakes. I run a true soft wash at low pressure with a cleaning mix that handles the algae and chalk while letting the surface stay intact. The house comes out even, with no streaks where the wand sat too long.

Question 2

Stratford gets a lot of train and traffic noise from the PATCO line and the White Horse Pike. Does that affect my house at all?

Not the noise itself, but the same corridor brings a steady film of road grit, brake dust, and a little bit of train brake metal that lands on whatever sits downwind. If your house faces the Pike or the train side of town, the front always grays out faster than the back. An annual front rinse plus a full house wash every two years keeps it from baking in and dulling the paint.

We have a small concrete driveway and the surface is flaking. Can you save it or do we need a new one?

Flaking on the surface, what we call spalling, is usually fixable when the slab underneath is still sound. I clean the loose material off, profile the surface so a repair coat will bond, and apply a polymer-modified overlay that gives you a fresh wear surface. If the slab itself is cracked through and lifting, replacement of the failing section makes more sense. I will tell you straight which one your driveway needs after I look at it.

How do you handle a paver walkway that has settled near the front step?

Settling at a front step is almost always the base, not the pavers. I lift the affected stones, address what is happening underneath, usually packing in fresh stone and sand to set a stable base, and reset the pavers to the right pitch so water moves away from the house. After that I clean the run, refill every joint with polymeric sand, and seal so the next round of weeds and ants does not start over at year one.

Question 5

Our chain link fence around the back yard is leaning at one corner. Can that be fixed without replacing it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Chain link leans almost always come down to a corner post that has worked loose or a top rail that came uncoupled. I reset the post with fresh concrete, retension the fabric, and reattach the rail. The fence ends up tighter than it was before. If the fabric itself has rusted out at the bottom, I can replace just that section without redoing the whole run.

Do you do small handyman jobs around the property too?

All the time. A lot of my Stratford calls are a list of small things rather than one big project. A back gate that drags on the patio, a downspout that came down in a wind event, a custom fire pit for the back yard, fascia rot behind the gutter line, a porch column with a soft base. Send a few photos of the list and I can usually quote it without a separate trip out.
