Learn MoreGutter Cleaning in South New Jersey
Gutter cleaning is the cheapest insurance you can buy on a house. Two visits a year, one in spring and one in fall, and you avoid the rotted fascia, soaked soffits, and wet basements that come from gutters that cannot drain. South Jersey has plenty of mature trees in older neighborhoods around Cherry Hill, Moorestown, and Medford, and those oaks and maples drop a lot of material every year. After 25 years on ladders around here, I have lost count of the homeowners who told me they wished they had called sooner.
The actual cleaning is straightforward. The difference is what gets done past the obvious leaves in the trough. Downspouts, hangers, leaks, fascia, and pitch all matter. A real gutter cleaning checks all of it.
Hand Cleaning, Not Just Blowing
I scoop the heavy material out of every gutter run by hand and bag it. A leaf blower on a packed gutter just turns wet leaves into wet leaves with a fresh top layer. After the heavy stuff is out, I flush the trough with water and watch how it runs to the downspout. If it pools in spots, the gutter has lost pitch and needs a hanger or two adjusted, and I will let you know.
Downspouts Are Where Clogs Hide
The trough is what you see. The downspouts and underground drain extensions are where most actual clogs live. Elbows pack up with shingle grit and small debris that the hose carried down from the gutter. I run water from the top and confirm clean flow at the bottom. If an elbow is packed I clear it. If an underground extension is blocked or collapsed, you find out from me before you find out from a flooded foundation in a heavy storm. Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Marlton, and Moorestown homes from the 1960s and 1970s often have older buried PVC or even clay drains that have failed at the joints.
Hangers, Seams, And Fascia
While I am up there, I am looking. Loose spike and ferrule hangers, sagging mid spans, leaking inside corners, soft fascia behind the gutter, and shingle wear at the eaves. I take a quick photo of anything that needs a heads up and let you know how serious it is. Some things are fine to leave for a season, others are worth fixing now while a ladder is already up. Either way, you get the information.
When To Schedule
Most South Jersey homes do best on a spring and fall schedule. Spring cleans the helicopter seeds, oak tassels, and pollen out before summer thunderstorms. Fall cleans the leaves out before winter ice has a chance to back up under the shingles. Heavily wooded properties in Medford and older Cherry Hill neighborhoods with mature oak and maple often benefit from a third cleaning right at the end of leaf drop. Open lots in Washington Township and Glassboro can usually run on the standard two visit cycle.
